Somewhere this week, a headline told someone that a substance changed everything. The words were confident, the claim was big, and almost none of it was in the original paper. This is not usually a lie. It is what happens when a careful finding travels — and at every stop, it gets a little louder and a little less true.
Let's trace that journey, because once you can see the steps, you can never quite unsee them.
The paper. A research team writes something modest and hedged: "In a small, uncontrolled survey, participants reported a slight improvement in mood; results may reflect expectation and require controlled follow-up." Notice the qualifiers — small, uncontrolled, reported, may. Each one is doing real work.
The press release. The university's communications office needs the study to sound fundable and shareable. "Survey suggests microdosing linked to better mood." The word uncontrolled has quietly left the building.
The news headline. An editor needs a click. "Microdosing Boosts Mood, Study Finds." Now a tentative association has become an active verb: boosts. The sample size is gone. The word reported is gone.
The social post. A stranger screenshots the headline: "Science PROVES microdosing fixes your mood 🍄." Proof has appeared from nowhere. So has certainty.
By the time a finding reaches your feed, the qualifiers have usually been stripped out and the certainty has been added in.
Imagine the real study behind "Microdosing Boosts Mood" was this: 60 people who already microdose filled in an online questionnaire and, on average, rated their mood slightly higher than they remembered feeling before. No placebo group. No one was randomly assigned. People reported their own dose and their own outcome.
That is a genuine observation worth publishing. It is not evidence that the substance boosts mood. The headline didn't lie about the topic — it lied about the strength and certainty of the finding. The actual measured outcome (a modest, self-reported mood rating in a self-selected group) is a very different object from the claim made about it (microdosing

You don't need a statistics degree to read more honestly. You need three questions, asked every time.
Who was studied? Sixty enthusiasts who already believe? Mice? Twelve healthy young men? A claim is only as broad as the people behind it.
What was actually measured? A self-reported mood rating is not the same as a clinical diagnosis. "Felt more creative" is not a measured increase in creative output. Find the real outcome, not the headline word.
Compared to what? Compared to nothing? To how they remembered feeling? To a placebo? Without a comparison, an improvement could be the drug, the season, the hope, or simple change over time.
Psilocybin attracts thrilling headlines almost weekly, and that is exactly why a little friction helps. Excitement is a feeling about a claim; evidence is what survives the three questions. A story can be fascinating, well-meaning, and still tell you nothing reliable about whether something works.
None of this is about self-treating or deciding what to take. We are learning to read — to meet a bold claim with calm curiosity instead of belief or dismissal. Take less certainty from a headline. Notice more about what the study actually did.
